i think patch 1.2 broke this quest. I am having this problem. I have the quest to go to Mzulft to "Search for Synod researchers". I go there, here I find a dead mage to the right of the door. He will not engage in conversation with me, he only rumbles on with one-liners. He also can not be harmed so thus can not be killed to loot his dead body.

Also Gavros will not be in the entrance to Mzulft to give you the key. Updating the game to a newer version will not solve the problem for existing saved games.
